What Is Baccarat and Why Is It So Popular?

If you've ever watched a James Bond film, you'll know that 007 almost always ends up at a baccarat table — tuxedo on, drink in hand. That's no coincidence. Baccarat has long been associated with royalty and the upper class. But the truth is, baccarat is actually one of the easiest casino games to learn — and that's exactly what makes it so popular in Malaysia.

At Raja99, baccarat is more than just picking Banker or Player. We offer over 14 different baccarat variants, including Live Baccarat with professional female dealers, Speed Baccarat for fast-action fans, European-style Punto Banco, and several exclusive variants available only on our platform. All of this can be played from your smartphone — from anywhere in Malaysia.

For Malaysians in particular, baccarat holds a special appeal — it's a game that relies heavily on luck and intuition, two things deeply embedded in local betting culture. Unlike poker, which demands memorising charts and complex strategies, baccarat only asks you to make one decision: Banker, Player, or Tie. It really is that simple.

How to Play Baccarat – A Complete Guide for Malaysian Players

Baccarat is one of the easiest casino games to play, yet many people hesitate to try it because it looks glamorous and complicated from the outside. In reality, there are only three core things you need to understand.

Card Values in Baccarat

Numbered cards 2 through 9 carry their face value. 10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings are all worth zero. Aces are worth 1. If the total of two cards exceeds 9, the first digit is dropped — for example, 7 + 8 = 15, so the hand value is 5. The goal is to get as close to 9 as possible.

Three Main Bet Types
Betting Payout House Edge RTP
Banker (Casino Representative) 1:1 (-5% commission) 1.06% 98.9%
Player (Player Representative) 1:1 1.24% 98.7%
Tie (Tie) 8:1 14.4% 85.6%
Banker Pair 11:1 10.4% 89.6%
Player Pair 11:1 10.4% 89.6%

Tip: The Banker bet carries the lowest house edge (1.06%) — making it the best long-term option. The Tie bet may pay 8:1, but its house edge is significantly higher and is not recommended as part of any consistent betting strategy.

Third Card Rules
When Does the Player Draw a Third Card?
  • Total 0–5: Must draw a third card
  • Total 6–7: Stand (no card drawn)
  • Total 8–9: Natural — game over
When Does Banker Draw a Third Card?
  • Total 0–2: Always draw a card
  • Total 3–6: Depends on Player's third card
  • Total 7: Always stand
  • Total 8–9: Natural — game over
Important Note

In baccarat, you don't decide whether to draw or stand — those decisions are governed entirely by the rules of the game. Your only job is to pick who you think will win before the cards are dealt.

Understanding the Baccarat Score Road

One thing that tends to confuse new baccarat players is the colourful scoreboard on the table — known as the "Road" or score road. It's a record of previous hand results that many players use to spot patterns.

There are several road types commonly used: the Big Road (a straightforward Banker/Player/Tie record), the Bead Plate (a continuous grid record), and derived roads such as the Big Eye Boy, Small Road, and Cockroach Pig. At Raja99, all these roads are displayed automatically on the table interface to help players make informed decisions.

Note: Score roads are for reference only. Baccarat is an independent game — mathematically, each hand has no influence on the one before it.

Baccarat Strategies Commonly Used by Players

While baccarat is a game of chance, many Malaysian players at Raja99 use bankroll management strategies to get the most out of their sessions.

1
Always Bet Banker

With a house edge of just 1.06%, Banker is the best-odds bet in baccarat. Even after the 5% commission, it still delivers a higher return than Player or Tie over the long run.

2
1-3-2-6 Strategy

Start with RM10, then RM30, RM20, and RM60 across four consecutive winning hands. When the sequence ends or you lose, start over. It's an effective way to lock in profits during a winning streak.

3
Avoid the Tie Bet

The Tie bet may look attractive at 8:1, but a house edge of 14.4% makes it mathematically unfavorable. Use the Tie bet for occasional entertainment, not as a core strategy.

4
Set Win & Loss Limits

Before you sit down at a table, set your limits — for example, stop when you're up RM500 or down RM200. That kind of discipline is what keeps baccarat enjoyable rather than stressful. Raja99 provides betting limit tools within your account settings.
